Live Training · Division 6

Read what an answer is
actually doing.

A live one-hour session teaching HR and hiring teams to read what someone's answer is doing in interviews and difficult conversations, grounded in the real science of deception rather than the body-language myths most training repeats.

What the research actually says

54%
Untrained accuracy

People judge lies at roughly chance level. Bond & DePaulo 2006, synthesising 206 studies across 24,483 judges.

55.5%
Professional accuracy

Professionals score 55.5% versus 54.2% for everyone else. Aamodt & Custer 2006. Experience alone doesn't build the skill.

r = .05
Confidence vs accuracy

Confidence correlates at r = .05 with accuracy. Age, experience, and education predict it no better. Certainty is not evidence.

Who it's for

HR, People, L&D, and hiring teams.

The session is designed for practitioners who read people as part of their work, not investigators or detectives. It covers two sides of that work.

Hiring

Interviews and references

Most interviewers assess candidates using instinct and pattern recognition built on largely fictional cues. This session replaces that with fifteen observable language patterns, grounded in thirty years of controlled research, that tell you what an answer is structurally doing rather than guessing whether the person is nervous.

Employee Conversations

Investigations, performance, grievances

Workplace investigations and difficult conversations require a structured way to evaluate what is being said and what is being avoided. The same patterns that reveal account problems in interviews apply equally to performance conversations, complaint investigations, and any setting where you need to understand what an account is actually doing.

Positioning

Why this training and not the usual.

01

Built for HR, not investigators

Most deception detection training comes from former law enforcement or forensic psychologists writing for criminal interview contexts. This session is built for hiring and employee relations practice, where the stakes, constraints, and legal context are different.

02

Honest about what indicators can and cannot prove

No responsible reading framework treats any single cue as conclusive. You will leave knowing what a pattern suggests and how to use it as a navigation tool, not as a verdict. The whole point is rigour.

03

Strong on hiring

The hiring angle is underserved. Deception research covers criminal interrogation heavily and hiring almost not at all. This session draws on what the verbal and linguistic research actually shows for employment interview contexts.

04

Academic foundation without the mystique act

The curriculum comes from an MSc in Leadership, not an ex-agency background. The research cited is peer-reviewed. You will be able to check the sources yourself. The approach is transparent by design.

Curriculum

Fifteen patterns. Five groups.

The session works through fifteen observable language patterns, organised into five groups. Each group represents a different dimension of how accounts behave when something is being managed.

01
What was not said

Absence, omission, and the structural gaps that appear where genuine recall would normally produce content.

02
How far they stand from it

Pronoun distance, depersonalisation, and the ways language creates space between the speaker and what they are describing.

03
Where the account thins

Memory variability, level of detail, and the inconsistencies between high-density and low-density sections of an account.

04
What arrives uninvited

Explanations offered before a question requires them, emotions that appear out of structural sequence, and spontaneous corrections.

05
How it is said

Pace, hedging, structure of denial, and the linguistic markers that distinguish constructed from retrieved information.
